World Premiere of Miss Meena & the Masala Queens announced by Rifco

The Artistic director of Rifco, Pravesh Kumar has announced the world premiere of Miss Meena and the Masala Queens in the UK. The play has been written by Harvey Virdi, who has collaborated with Rifco before. Their previous collaborations include “Meri Christmas” and “Happy Birthday Sunita”. The play will open on 9th May this year at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Nuffield Southampton Theatres and Warwick Arts Centre amongst others.

Miss Meena and the Masala Queens is inspired by the drag queens of UK. The production aims to tell the tales of men who have chosen to be a female during the night. Along with containing big dance numbers and glorious costumes, Miss Meena and the Masala Queens, aims to be a human story.

According to Pravesh Kumar “I always wanted Rifco to produce a play which will put the LGBTQ community at the centre. As a theatre maker, it has always been my priority to tell stories which haven’t been told yet”.

Rifco was started by Pravesh Kumar in the year 1999 with the aim of making theatre for a community which wasn’t yet represented on the British stage. Before opening Rifco, Pravesh Kumar worked in Bollywood as a writer and an assistant director. His maiden theatrical production in the UK was “Bollywood – Yet another Love Story”. It was a big success and made him a known name. After that Rifco has produced many more successful shows like “It ain’t all Bollywood”, “Britain’s got Bhangra” and “Where is my desi soulmate”?
