Madonna was recently honoured as “Woman of the year” at the “Billboard’s Women In Music Awards 2016”, on 9th December at New York City. She was also recognized as the highest grossing touring (female) artist of all time. Her last tour had raked in as much as $170 million.
While accepting her award, the 58 year old singer, delivered a heartfelt speech which included everything from ageism to misogyny.
Madonna said “in this industry ageing female singers are vilified, criticized and are definitely not heard on the radio”. She also said “A lot of people think that I and controversy go hand in hand. I think by sticking around (in the music industry) in spite of my age I have been controversial enough”.
Such a speech from Madonna isn’t surprising, considering she has been honest throughout her career.
To her fans, she said, “Your support means a lot to me, more than you think. You have made me what I am, thank you”.
She didn’t forget to thank her critics as well. “To all the people who doubted me and made my life hell, I thank all of you because it is your resistance which turned me into a fighter”.
