We got our son admitted into preschool of an independent school earlier this year. The good state schools in the area were outside catchment so we had little hopes that he will be offered a place there but to our surprise, he has been offered a place in of the schools which is rated outstanding in the area. Now I am thoroughly confused whether I should continue sending him to independent school for the price we are paying or move him to state school to these primary years of schooling. He has been going to the independent school for last few months and feels settled but thinking about how the money aspect, I am not sure if will be more sensible to avoid the cost of education while we can! Really in need of some genuine advice from all the ladies.

Arshi Aziz Moiz: That’s so good he got offered a place in a school with such good ofsted rating. I would personally prefer sending my child to the state run school as I find independent ones are pretty expensive.

Sarita Khanna: A child needs to learn about real life from the beginning. If you send your son to the local school for primary education and to an independent school from the age of 11 yrs you will have given him a very good understanding of the world and a good education as well

Nina Manahan: If the ofsted report is outstanding then no reason why he cant go to the state school. Also, is there a local f/b group for your area? Worth asking for some opinions on the school…im sure there will be parents on that grp who can give u some feedback.

Rina Pithiya: Please remember that Ofsted reports look at the academic side when going in to inspect schools. Ask yourself, how does the school deal with bullying, how do they support the child emotionally if they had a problem, how do they support a child who has anxieties etc Academics is just one part of a child’s life. There are other things to consider. Both my girls have been to a state school to begin with and then moved them to an independent school, so I have seen both.

Pravina Vandra: I think that if he’s got a place in a good school then he should go there and you can save money for his university day by having an investment into his future!

Preeti Moktali-Athreya: I was in the same situation 2 years ago. We had moved out of area and had no choice other than independent school. But when we did get a place in an outstanding school we took it. Our reasoning behind it was that at Primary level the education at both independent and outstanding state schools are quite similar. Plus we wanted to save the money in case we needed independent school at secondary stage.

Bhanu Sandeep: There is definitely difference between private and state school irrespective of ratings due to funds private schools have. I would recommend private schooling for primary and then grammar for secondary. But If you can afford, it’s always private. During interviews and university admissions preference is always given to private school kids. 70% of university is full kids from private.

Garima Sharma: I would say that if you know your child is going to thrive in any school because of his capabilities then choose outstanding state school . But if you think your child can do better with some extra help , more attention, small groups then choose private school . There is no guarantee that state school child will not do well or private school kid will do really well .

Jasmine Kochar: Continue at Private school if you can afford it. The difference is noticeable when they are trying for uni admissions.

Bithika Raha: As an experienced mother suggest …private school where he is settled. All the best.

Dipal Patel: It depends on what you want. Independent schools are expensive but clearly you get more from Independent schools then what state schools can offer (ow no one would be sending their kids to independent schools). I personally feel if you can afford Independent schools then thats is better than sending you child to state school. Look at the admission stats of Oxford and Cambridge unis, majority comes from private schools. It does make a lot of difference.

Priyanka Sharma: Dipal Patel I am curious about this. The university results are good for kids who have done primary education in private schools or are they good for those who have done secondary schooling from private schools? And where does grammar schools stand because they are state funded secondary schools
